Samoa's Darius Visser and Sean Cotter celebrate

The last competitive game of cricket Visser played was back in 2017 against Gordon in NSW Premier Cricket 1st grade. Since then, Hype Cricket has been the extent of his involvement within the game .. till now. For the past few years, Hype have been the leaders in power hitting training in Sydney through the guidance of former MLB and Los Angeles Dodgers player, Trent Oeltjen. With these methods and volume, Visser transformed his game from a manipulative batsman to a power hitter.

Fast forward to 2024 and Samoa are hosting the EAP T20 World Cup qualifiers with Vanuatu, Cook Islands and Fiji to compete. Visser put these methods to good use immediately against Fiji in their opener with 30 (12) with 4 sixes including 4/11 (4). Then, in his third T20I, Visser would break a world record against Vanuatu by hitting 39 runs in a single over, the most expensive over in T20I history. This over included six 6's plus three no balls and would ultimately help Visser bring up his maiden T20I hundred. He would finish on 132 (62) including 14 sixes. Below are the records broken on that day:

  • Most runs scored in a single over (39) - including six 6's

  • Highest percentage of runs scored in a teams total - 75.8%

  • Highest score in a team bowled out - 132

Visser would score another 72 (39) against Fiji including 3/31 with the ball, helping him finish the tournament with 265 runs @53 and 12 wickets at 12.25. These numbers were enough for him to be named player of the tournament and batsman of the tournament. He would finish the tournament having hit 204 runs in boundaries (156 of those in sixes).

Visser joins, Yuvraj Singh, Kieron Pollard and Dipendra Singh Airee to have hit six 6's in a T20I over.

Overall, the Samoan side incredibly qualified through to the next stages of the World Cup qualifiers to be played in 2025. We wish Darius and all of Cricket Samoa all the very best.
